The Portsmouth to Cherbourg route is served by two vessels, the conventional ferry Cap Finistère and the Fast Ferry Normandie Express.
The Cap Finistere is Brittany Ferries'
newest ship and a magnificent vessel with all the facilities expected of
a modern cruise ferry. From the 22nd March 2010 the Cap Finistere
will sail from Portsmouth to Cherbourg 3 times a week
The Portsmouth to Cherbourg ferry crossing operated by Brittany Ferries
uses a Fast Ferry during the period mid March to end October. The Normandie
Express leaves Portsmouth at breakfast time and arrives in Portsmouth just
3 hours later. There is also a mid afternoon sailing.
The return journey times are more complicated, so we suggest you check them
out on the Brittany Ferries wesbite. The fast ferry
leaves Portsmouth at breakfast time and arrives in Portsmouth just 3 hours
later. There is also a mid afternoon sailing.
The fast ferry Normandie Vitesse offers the fastest crossing available on the Western
Channel.
The fast journey time compares favourably with airline times, especially given the
long delays often experienced at airports and the sometimes lengthy transfers. But
in addition you have plenty of room to move about and of course you can take as
much luggage as you can cram into the car. on the vessel is a café, a self-service
restaurant and a bar, plus a shop selling quality goods at great prices.
Portsmouth is centrally situated in Southern England, and is very easy to reach
as the M275 (a link from the M27) finishes right outside the dock gates. The city
itself has moved on recently and now boasts a very trendy waterside district making
an overnight stay here well worth while. And you can catch up with some of Britain's
naval heritage if you've time to spare.
Cherbourg is on the northern tip of the Carentan Peninsula in Normandy. The town
is mostly uninspiring, although the old town near the port is worth a visit and
has a number of bars and restaurants, as well as several hotels. This area of Normandy
has some excellent long stretches of sandy beach to enjoy. These beaches are also
much visited by those with an interest in the second world war, as many of them
were used as landing beaches by Allied troops. From Cherbourg the N13 takes you
to Caen in about 1 and a half hours, where you join the French motorway network.
Or you can head due south deeper into the lovely Norman countryside, or beyond towards
Mont St Michel, Brittany and the rest of Western France.
