Portsmouth is very easy to reach with the motorway taking you right to the
dockyard gates. From here you can take the
Portsmouth to Caen ferry, with good transport links into the whole
of France, especially convenient for going south now the new A28 is open from Alencon
to Tours.
If you're going to Brittany or the south-west of France the overnight
Portsmouth to St Malocrossing means you start your journey refreshed. St
Malo is an excellent starting point,
cutting a couple of hours off the drive from Caen, Cherbourg or Roscoff if you're
going south.
A new route to
St Malo from Plymouth starts in November 2011. This will run
during the winter months, until mid-March, and offers an easy get-away to Western
France.
During the summer a state of the art Fast Ferry operates from
Portsmouth to Cherbourg with a crossing time of just under 5 hours. In addition
the luxury ferry Cap Finistere operates this route 3 times a week throughout the
year.
And now you can travel in luxury from
Portsmouth to Santander in Northern Spain in just 24 hours on Brittany Ferries'
flagship, the Pont-Aven. Brittany Ferries has acquired a second luxury cruise ferry
for this route, so from March 2010 there will be three crossings weekly from Portsmouth
to Santander.
In addition in Spring 2011 the new route from
Portsmouth to Bilbao launches, with a crossing time of 24 hours
and served by the newest ship in the Brittany Ferries fleet, the Cap Finistere.
Plymouth
to Roscoff has always been a popular route for easy access to the glorious
coast and countryside of Brittany. Your journey is now a pleasure in itself, as
Brittany Ferries' modern ship, the Armorique, a state-of-the-art cruise ferry
was introduced in April 2009, replacing the previous rather elderly vessel.
The
fastest ferry crossing from the UK to Spain is offered from
Plymouth to Santander, the voyage taking just 18 hours, with the route sharing
the Pont Aven used on the Portsmouth Santander crossing. Plymouth has a direct
dual carriageway link into the M5.
Poole to Cherbourg is also a popular route. The crossing is served by the
Normandie Vitesse, a Fast Ferry, from May to October. The crossing takes just 2
and a quarter hours.
